Many Vietnamese communities, scattered around the world were built by the Vietnamese refugees. Most of these people were the Boat People who had overcome tremendous amount of obstacles on their journey across the sea to find life anew in distant land. The end of the Vietnam War was also the beginning of the largest mass exodus by sea in the world. Yet, only few publications about the exodus or the stories of hardships are found.
Set Sail: Commemorating the Boat People, a program hosted by Gạch Nối Magazine, will emphasize on the sufferings and hardships that the emigrants encountered in their search for a new beginning of opportunities. We want to share the priceless stories of the journey to the younger generations. It is our hope that the future generations will understand, remember, and cherish the opportunities available to them by those who came before. At our symposium, we will feature an art gallery and a reenactment to demonstrate the obstacles that the Boat People experienced in their journeys, which spanned over several decades. We look forward to your support and presence at our symposium on May 22nd, 2009 in the Multipurpose Room, University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
Nhiều cộng đồng người Việt ở hải ngoại đã được xây dựng nên bởi người Việt Nam tị nạn trên đất khách quê người. Phần nhiều trong số đó là những thuyền nhân đã trải qua cuộc hành trình vượt biển đầy gian lao. Phong trào vượt biên của người Việt sau chiến tranh Việt Nam đã tạo ra một cuộc di dân vượt biển lớn nhất thế giới. Những câu chuyện ra đi này ít được ai biết tới (nhất là với thế hệ sau này) hay chúng cũng ít được ghi lại trong sổ sách lịch sử.
Chương trình Ra Khơi, của Tạp chí Gạch Nối, mang ý tưởng nhớ đến những gian lao và sự hy sinh của các thuyền nhân bỏ quê hương để ra đi xây dựng một cuộc sống mới. Chúng tôi muốn nhấn mạnh cuộc hành trình vượt biên của những bậc tiền nhân để làm bài học vô giá cho các thế hệ sau. Mong rằng các bạn trẻ sẽ hiểu, nhớ, và quý trọng những cơ hội mà có được ngày hôm nay trong xa hội Mỹ nói chung và trong cộng đồng người Việt ở hải ngoại nói riêng. Hình ảnh và bối cảnh sẽ được tạo dựng qua những kinh nghiệm của các thuyền nhân để tưởng nhớ cuộc hành trình dài đăng đẳng của người Việt chúng ta qua nhiều thập niên. Chúng tôi mong có sự ủng hộ tinh thần, sự hiện diện, và đóng góp tại đêm hội thảo vào ngày 22 tháng 5, 2009 tại Multipurpose Room, University of California - San Diego (UCSD).

Hey guys,
It's almost the end of week 4, how is everyone surviving their midterms??? Thank you all those who came to Gach Noi's GBM yesterday and hung out with us at Tap Ex for the after social. Hope that everyone had a great time yesterday. Gach Noi would like to update you guys on some of our upcoming events to remind those who came to the meeting yesterday and to inform those who could not make it yesterday.
1) Gach Noi's hiking trip will be scheduled for Sunday 5/3, more details will be available as the date approaches.
2) For those of you who wants to be a leader, apply to be Gach Noi's next year officer, application is on our website gachnoi.org and you can turn it in at our next GBM. Deadline is Tuesday 5/5.
3) The election will be on Tuesday 5/12. Location and time will be announced.
4) Gach Noi's Potluck and Karaoke night will be on 5/16 still waiting to get a confirmation. Come and sing your heart out and share some of your favorite dishes.
5) Our next GBM will be on Tuesday 5/5 location and time will be emailed out later.
6) GACH NOI NEEDS YOUR SUBMISSIONS: POEMS, STORIES, JOKES,
IDEAS, SHOUT OUTS, ETC...PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SEND IT IN TO submission@gachnoimagazine.org. And one of your article can be on our color pages!!!
